India cross 10 crore Demat accounts in August 2022, 60% new Demat accounts opened in 29 months

Indian stock market touched a significant milestone of 10 crore Demat accounts in August 2022. A total of 22 lakh new Demat accounts were opened in the month of August. Now the total Demat account in India is 10,05,10,862 crores which is a new record for the Indian stock market.

According to the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) data, NSDL has a total of 2,88,59,976 active Demat accounts as of August 2022. According to the Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) data, CDSL has a total of 7,16,50,886 active Demat accounts as of August 2022.

The highest number of Demat accounts were registered in the year 2020-21, around 142 lakh Demat accounts were registered with CDSL and NSDL. In FY21, India’s leading equity index Nifty had gained 70.9% and the Sensex had gained 68%.

As per the data of depository firms NSDL and CDSL, the value of securities in Demat form in CDSL stood at Rs 27.4 lakh crore at the end of March 2021, while the value of securities in Demat form in NSDL was Rs 243.7 lakh crore at the end of March 2021.

Demat accounts grew by 60% to 10 crores by August 2022 as against 4.1 crores in pre-pandemic (March 2020). Last year 4.2 lakh new Demat accounts were opened per month whereas this year the figure has increased to around 12 lakh.

NSDL added 4 lakh Demat accounts in July 2022 and by the end of July 2022, there were a total of 284 lakh Demat accounts with NSDL. While CDSL added 14 lakh Demat accounts in July 2022 and by the end of July 2022, there were a total of 699 lakh Demat accounts with CDSL.

National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) had 217 lakh Demat accounts at the end of March 2021 as against 197 lakh Demat accounts at the end of March 2020. Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) had 334 lakh Demat accounts at the end of March 2021 as against 212 lakh Demat accounts at the end of March 2020.

Nehal Vora, CEO of Central Depository Services (India) Limited (CDSL), said that the increasing Demat account indicates that more and more citizens now consider the stock market as a rising investment avenue.
